Confirmation 2019-20 will be held at
What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is an opportunity for students entering 8th grade or later to take ownership of their faith. Throughout the school year, we will discover what it means to live within God’s Story. The course will begin in September and will meet monthly, culminating in an anointing ceremony the presentation of a Bible and the option to be baptized at the end of April. Keep reading to learn more about how Confirmation works at Jacob’s Well.
We will gather at 8:00 AM once per month on Sunday mornings in the Youth Room. We will then sit together in worship during the 9:30 worship gathering, then attend middle school during the 11:00.
Here is the list of meeting dates, times and locations:
- October 20: Orientation (12:30PM after church)
- November 10: God’s Story
- December 8: My Story
- January 12: God’s Mission
- February 9: Spiritual Gifts
- March 8: My Life
- April 19: Final Countdown
- April 26: Confirmation Ceremony
Note: We know teenagers are busy. If a confirmand needs to miss a week or two, that’s fine, they can always make it up later, but please make it a priority whenever possible.
Going Deeper Devotionals:
Between meetings, students will be required to complete an experience-based worksheet found in the Confirmation Notebook. Each worksheet is designed to go deeper with the previous gathering’s conversation, and to also introduce the conversation coming the following meeting. Students should take their time with these – they will have an entire month to complete them between meetings.
At Jacob’s Well, we believe strongly in discipleship – the more positive adult influences in students life, the better. Each confirmation student will be matched up with two mentors to come along side them during the school year and, hopefully, beyond. Each pair of mentors will oversee a group of 3-5 students will will gather once a month on their own time to discuss what they’ve been learning and how they’ve been growing during this pivotal year. These groups will also be primary dialogue groups on Sunday gatherings too.
There will be required memorization throughout the school year. Students will be expected to commit eight different verses (found in your notebook), the books of the Bible, the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostle’s Creed and a Personal Confirmation Verse to memory.
Worship Gathering Notes:
Students will take notes during FIVE different Sunday worship gatherings during the school year. Most can be taken care of on mornings when we return to church following our meetings, but three other notes need to be done on their own time or on the last Sunday of the month when our students join corporate worship.
Personal Confirmation Verse:
Every confirmand will have the opportunity to select their own “Personal Confirmation Verse”. This verse is to be selected on their own. The verse can be whatever they want it to be – they will share these verses and why they chose them with the congregation during the Confirmation Ceremony.
Ceremony & Anointing:
At the end of the school year, on April 26, confirmands will be recognized in front of the community with a ritual of anointing (if they’ve already been baptized) of baptism (if they haven’t already). Confirmands will also receive a personalized Confirmation bible to commemorate the experience.
