Confirmation 2017-18 will be held at
What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is an opportunity for students entering 8th grade or later to take ownership of their faith. Throughout the school year, we will discover what it means to live within God’s Story. The course will begin in September and will meet monthly, culminating in an anointing ceremony the presentation of a Bible and the option to be baptized at the end of April. Keep reading to learn more about how Confirmation works at Jacob’s Well.
Our gatherings will meet in various locations around Kansas City. We do this for two reasons: first, by moving outside the church, it reminds the students that living out their faith is not limited to the church building. Second, when students step out of their normal routine they are able to reorganize their thoughts and experience what is being taught in new ways. On Sunday morning gatherings, the students will be shuttled back to church to sit together during the 9AM worship gathering.

Going Deeper Devotionals:
Between meetings, students will be required to complete an experience-based worksheet found in the Confirmation Notebook. Each worksheet is designed to go deeper with the previous gathering’s conversation, and to also introduce the conversation coming the following meeting. Students should take their time with these – they will have an entire month to complete them between meetings.
At Jacob’s Well, we believe strongly in discipleship – the more positive adult influences in students life, the better. Each confirmation student will be matched up with a confirmation mentor to come along side them during the school year and, hopefully, beyond. Students and mentors will meet once a month on their own time to discuss what they’ve been learning and how they’ve been growing during this pivotal year.
If parents or students have someone in mind for a mentor already, they are more than welcome to ask a mentor themselves, but we are happy to find a mentor for them. The deadline for finding a mentor is October 8.
There will be required memorization throughout the school year. Students will be expected to commit eight different verses, the books of the Bible, the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostle’s Creed and Personal Confirmation Verse to memory.
Students will take notes during FIVE different Sunday worship gatherings during the school year. Four can be taken care of on mornings when we return to church following our meetings, but three other notes need to be done on their own time or on the last Sunday of the month when our students join corporate worship.
Personal Confirmation Verse:
Every confirmand will have the opportunity to select their own “Personal Confirmation Verse”. This verse is to be selected on their own. The verse can be whatever they want it to be – they will share these verses and why they chose them with the congregation during the Confirmation Ceremony.
Ceremony & Anointing:
At the end of the school year, on April 29, confirmands will declare their faith and be recognized for their efforts in front of the community. They will receive a personalized confirmation Bible, be anointed with oil and be given the opportunity to be baptized if they haven’t already (baptisms may happen on a different date).
